Faced with thelack of reciprocity in visa policies, Namibia has decided to impose visas on citizens of 31 countries. This measure is designed to ensure diplomatic fairness and should come into force shortly.
Until recently, many tourists were able to visit Namibia without having to worry about administrative formalities thanks to visa exemptions granted by the Namibian government. However, less than half of the countries benefiting from these exemptions have adopted a similar approach towards Namibian nationals. This lack of reciprocity encouraged the Namibian government to revisit its immigration policy, as they increase the number of entry points eligible for visa-on-arrival.
An effort at diplomatic fairness
Namibia wishes to ensure balanced and fair interactions with other nations. By imposing a entry visa to nationals of countries that do not offer the same advantages to its citizens, it is seeking to establish diplomatic parity. Visit Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Security and Protection (MHAISS) confirmed this decision after Cabinet approval.
The 31 countries concerned
Here is the list of 31 nationalities who will soon need a visa to enter Namibia: Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Belarus, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Uzbekistan.
These countries, whose citizens previously enjoyed visa-free entry, will now have to follow the new rules imposed by Namibia, which will be listed shortly.
How to obtain a visa
According to MHAISS, citizens of these countries will be able to receive a visa on arrival in Namibia. However, they will first have to complete a online application.
