Telecommuting gives color to the U.S. market

The coronavirus pandemic has triggered a transition to remote working. This has reshaped the American market. To understand this change, academics and researchers have collected data to study the situation on the other side of the Atlantic.

U.S. telecommuting market statistics

Through the study by these Stanford academicsthe experts found that telecommuting had declined sharply since the peak of the pandemic in 2020. This was when almost two-thirds of jobs were done remotely. Nevertheless, it has stabilized at a very high level. According to these experts, by 2021 and 2022, around a third of jobs were carried out remotely in the United States.

On the other hand, these academics supported this observation and asserted that most remote workers have switched to hybrid schedules. In addition, a Gallup Post revealed that 29 % of teleworkers worked full-time in June, compared with 39 % in February. The proportion of mixed schedules also increased by a comparable amount.

Teleworking for the knowledge industry

The wave of remote working has also shaken the so-called knowledge industries. Within these industries, certain categories of work are more likely to be performed remotely. Experts have also noted that the highest rates are found in the following areas:

  • Technology and Communications ;
  • Professional Services and Finance ;
  • Insurance.

These data were collected from more than 200,000 companies using payroll and benefits provider Gusto. The experts have proved through these data that remote working is growing at all levels.

The real teleworking revolution

Researchers have shown that the real remote revolution is taking place in construction companies. This type of company had never before considered a hybrid or remote model for its back-office staff.

When the pandemic hit, these companies adapted by abandoning the tedious workflow. They now use simplified cloud providers. Their managers have learned to manage staff schedules to retain the majority of their workforce.

Telecommuting trends by region

The researchers also identified the regions with the highest rates of remote working. These are Manhattanfrom District of Columbia and of San Francisco. There is also most of the suburbs of the Northern Virginia. This includes Arlington countiesof Falls Church, d'Alexandria and of Loudoun as well as the counties of Fairfax. The Federal Scientific Center in Los Alamosin New Mexico is also included. There's also a rich lakeside enclave in ForsythGeorgia, northeast of Atlanta.

Furthermore, according to Census Bureautelecommuting is encouraging people to move to rural areas. For example, between 2020 and 2021, Manhattan and San Francisco will lose more than 10,000 inhabitants. The working-age population also fell by almost 10 % in each county.
