Since April 28, Russia has made it possible for foreign travelers and their children under the age of 18 to register their stay online.
Vladimir Putin amended articles 20 and 22 of the Federal Law on the Registration of Migration of Foreign Citizens and Stateless Persons in the Russian Federation that brings about this change.
When traveling in Russia for more than 7 days (excluding weekends)There is a compulsory registration requirement to register your presence with the Russian authorities. Registration must be made within seven days of arrival in Russia.. If you are staying in several different accommodations during your trip, you will need to register at each new location.
If you were staying in a hotel, hostel, rented apartment or other type of commercial accommodation in Russia, check-in was usually carried out by the establishment's staff for a small fee. The host is responsible for registering his foreign guests. You had to provide your travel documents (passport, visa, etc.) to the hotel or hostel so that they could register them with the relevant authorities.
Once you had registered, the establishment gave you a registration confirmation form or sheet, which you had to keep for the duration of your stay in Russia, and present when the authorities carried out checks.
Otherwise, the traveler had to present himself at one of the Russian immigration centers to have his form validated. These were not necessarily present throughout the (vast) territory.
From now on, you will need to visit the government website to complete the procedure.. The site is not yet very clear on the steps to be taken or the final cost, but this should improve soon.
Certain categories of travelers, such as ships' crews, diplomats or people staying with friends or family, may be subject to different registration rules.
