Taiwan gives tourists money to travel to its country

Taiwan gives money to tourists to encourage them to visit the island. This offer covers part of the costs of travel, accommodation and car rental.

Eligible tourists must be foreign nationals and have booked their travel through a government-approved travel agency. The initiative is aimed at boosting Taiwan's tourism industry, which has been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the pandemic, tourism was booming in Taiwan, with a record number of 11.84 million foreign visitors in 2019This represents an increase of 7.4% over the previous year. However, the COVID-19 pandemic had a considerable impact on Taiwan's tourism industry, with the number of foreign visitors in 2020 down 79.5% on the previous year.

To encourage tourists to return, the Taiwanese government has launched a series of initiatives, including an offer for domestic travel and discounts for tourist attractions.

The Tourism Board has offered to donate 5,000 TWD (5.000 €) to 500,000 individual visitors and 20,000 TWD (20.000 €) to 90,000 visitor groups to cover part of their travel, accommodation and car rental costs. Subsidies are limited to a certain number of travelers, and are awarded on the basis of the "first come, first served". The money will be paid digitally, with no cash outlay.

The goal? To regain their tourist numbers by 2025, despite the tense geopolitical context with neighboring China.
