With entry into force in April 2026, the UK Home Affairs Committee has taken a decisive step towards harmonizing border controls by approving the regulatory framework for the’Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to travel on the island of Guernsey.
The new system is designed to control the entry of international visitors arriving from outside the Common travel zone (CTA), encompassing the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, including Jersey. This measure, which reinforces the security of migratory flows while simplifying administrative formalities, marks a significant evolution in the management of access to Guernsey.
How does the ETA apply to Guernsey?
Cost : ETA is set at 20 £ per person since April 2026. This fare applies to all travelers concerned, including children and infants.
Period of validity : Once issued, the authorization is valid for a period of 2 years. However, if the holder's passport expires before this deadline, the UK ETA in Guernsey lapses and must be renewed with the new travel document.

The ETA is now required to enter Guernsey from outside the island. Common Travel Area (CTA). Once this border has been crossed, the scheme allows free movement between Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and the UK, without additional checks. During its two-year validity period, the permit allows multiple entries into this area of free movement, for stays of up to 6 months per visit.

Apply online for an ETA for Guernsey
To apply for an ETA Guernsey, the procedure is carried out entirely online via the official portal gov.uk, the dedicated “UK ETA” mobile application or a private agency such as Visamundi. Although the system is designed to be seamless, you will need the following items:

Who can travel to Guernsey without an ETA?
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) has become the norm for entering Guernsey. However, several categories of travellers are dispensed of this formality. Here is a detailed list of persons who are not required to obtain an ETA.
British, Irish and Overseas Territories citizens
Freedom of movement within the Common Travel Area (CTA) applies to :
- British and Irish citizens You don't need an ETA.
- Dual nationality If you hold British or Irish nationality in addition to another nationality, you are not eligible for the ETA. You must travel with your British or Irish passport (or a valid passport with a certificate of eligibility).
- Nationals of overseas territories : Holders of a Citizen of British overseas territories or of British national (overseas) are also exempt.
Specific cases for French nationals
Thanks to local agreements and special arrangements, some travellers from France benefit from exceptions:
- Day trips : French nationals making a return trip during the day (via ferry) can continue to use their French national identity card without the need for an ETA.
- School trips Children taking part in a school trip organized by a French educational establishment are exempt from the ETA.
Residents and Visa Holders
If you already have legal status in the area, ETA is not required:
