From August 1, 2023, Russia has relaunched its electronic visa systemThis initiative, which has already attracted more than 541,000 visitors over the past year, could soon undergo a major change. This initiative, which has already attracted more than 541,000 visitors in the space of a year, could soon undergo a major evolution.
Success calls for change
The Kremlin has no intention of stopping there. Given the popularity of the e-Visa, the Russian authorities are considering extending its validity (i.e. the length of time you can use the e-Visa after it has been issued). Currently limited to 60 days, with a maximum stay of 16 days, the e-Visa's validity could be doubled to 120 days, while the authorized length of stay would be increased to 30 days.
These modifications, if adopted, would represent a significant change for travelers. Imagine Russia: almost a month to explore the vast expanses of Russia, from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok, via Moscow and Lake Baikal. Perfect for globetrotters in search of long-distance adventure.
An expanding list of eligible countries
Russia is not stopping there in its drive for openness. Recently, 11 new countries joined the list of e-Visa-eligible nations: Barbados, Bhutan, Eswatini, Jordan, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkmenistan, Zimbabwe
This extension brings to 64 the total number of countries whose nationals can now take advantage of this simplified procedure to visit Russia.
A simplified process that appeals
The appeal of the Russian e-Visa lies in its simplicity. Gone are the days of endless paperwork and complex procedures, such as obtaining a hotel voucher that has to be sent to the embassy. From now on, a simple online request is all that's needed, with no need for a letter of invitation or hotel reservation. In less than 5 days, the document is issued, opening the doors to Russia for tourist, business or private visits.
This ease of access has already won over many travellers. Between August 2023 and July 2024, no fewer than 541,000 e-visas were issued, representing 70% of the total number of visas granted over the same period.
The figures speak for themselves: the China, l'Estonia, l'Germanythe Tรผrkiye and theIndia are among the main beneficiaries of this system, accounting for over 90% of e-Visas issued. A potential windfall for the Russian economy, which sees this as an opportunity to diversify its sources of revenue.
