Colombia wants to attract digital nomads with a special visa

A visa is an official document issued by the competent authorities of a country, which a foreigner must present when crossing another territory. It is issued according to the legislation of each country, and is required either for all foreign nationals, or according to the nationality of the visitor. There are currently several types of visa. Visas for destinations in digital nomad is one of the most recent.

Why was the digital nomad visa created?

It's important to point out that a digital nomad is someone who works as a freelancer, and is often a web entrepreneur or a telecommuting employee. It's becoming an increasingly popular way of life. Until recently, Asia was the leading destination for the majority of teleworkers. In recent years, however, South America has become a very popular market. Colombia is home to thousands of teleworkers every year. And it's one of the South American countries that has decided not to stand on the sidelines of this growth.

During the pandemic, working remotely became a necessity due to containment. Working from home became the ultimate alternative for most companies. As a result, many employees were able to relocate to other parts of the world where they could travel due to the standard of living, landscape and climatic conditions. Some countries have welcomed digital nomads. That's why Colombia has decided to introduce a special visa for digital nomads, to facilitate their access to the country and enable them to enjoy these favorable conditions for longer.

The new Colombia's digital nomad visa makes this country one of the best in the world for remote relocation. Colombia is a much-visited country in South America. Its capital, Medellin, was one of the first cities on the continent to promote digital nomads. Many people from all corners of the globe come here and integrate perfectly, thanks to a dynamic digital environment.

When will it be launched, and what's in it for you?

Following in the footsteps of Brazil and Argentina, which paved the way for teleworker residences earlier this year, Colombia has now joined the dance. That's right, the Colombian government is planning to make the country a popular destination for digital nomads.

The authorities have decided to launch a special visa for digital nomads in the next few days. The date chosen for the occasion is October 22 this year. A further incentive for the many teleworkers who dream of this destination for their activities.

This visa will bring many advantages to those who benefit from it. The conditions for obtaining it are very advantageous. All you need is a daily income of $22.80 or $684 per month.. These figures are far lower than those of many countries such as the United States, where the income requirement is $1256.70, or Costa Rica with its $3000.

Another major advantage of this visa is that it offers extended stays to workers who can prove that they are remotely employed. Currently, visitors to Colombia from the USA, the UK and many other European countries generally receive the visa on arrival at the airport. This visa only allows them to stay in the country for 90 days, renewable. The new visa for digital nomads, on the other hand, will allow them to stay for at least 2 years. It also serves as a guarantee for setting up a business in Colombia, which is not necessarily the case with other visas. It also means that you can open a bank account in the country to carry out your activities.

What else does it take to get it?

The main condition remains a monthly income of at least $648. The system will be launched in October, and the income requirement is the only specific condition known to date. There may be others, but we'll have to wait and see. Nevertheless usually, nomad visas are issued on presentation of certain documents. Such as :

  • a valid passport that is not due to expire during temporary residence,
  • a letter from your employer, written in English or Spanish in the case of Colombia, proving that you are remotely employed by the company,
  • proof of sufficient financial resources if you are self-employed,
  • all your income must come from outside sources,
  • health insurance for the duration of your stay,
  • a criminal record check to ensure that you are of good character.

Once you have met all these conditions, you will be deemed suitable for obtaining a nomadic visa in Colombia for your activities.
