Ethiopia is known as the cradle of humanity. There are many important archaeological and historical sites to visit, including the Omo Valley, where archaeologists have discovered the remains of several prehistoric hominids, as well as the remains of ancient Ethiopian civilization.
The country is also known for its rich religious heritage. It is home to many holy places for Ethiopian Christians, such as the rock churches of Lalibela and monasteries like Debre Damo and Yemrehana Krestos.
Ethiopia is also famous for its traditional festivals such as Timkat, celebrated in honor of Epiphany, which is one of the country's most colorful and vibrant events. People gather for religious ceremonies, dances and feasts in honor of the birth of Christ, and it's a must for tourists looking to discover Ethiopian culture.
Ethiopia's security situation is extremely unstable. Night-time travel outside the country's major cities is strictly inadvisable, and increased vigilance is recommended for all outings outside the capital Addis Ababa. Inter-community tensions and violent clashes have been reported in several parts of the country, notably in the Gambella region, in the west of the Oromia region and in the region around Awash. In northern Ethiopia (Tigray and the border regions of Amhara and Afar with Tigray), a conflict has been raging between the government and the TPLF since November 2020. In Addis Ababa, the situation is generally calm, but crime has risen sharply in recent months.
