Diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria: the current context
Alongside this measure for families, relations between Algeria and France are complicated. These tensions have been ongoing for over 9 months.
The situation has recently become even more tense with regard to official travel :
- French decision : France is now asking for a visa Algerian nationals holding diplomatic or service passports for short stays in France. This measure has been in force since May 16. Without this visa, these people will be refused entry at the French border. France justifies this by referring to "abuse" and "visits of convenience". Previously, these passports were visa-exempt thanks to a 2013 agreement.
- Algerian reaction: Algeria has announced that it will apply a "strict reciprocity. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers that France has suspended the 2013 agreement without respecting procedures. Algeria claims not to have been officially informed and has no particular interest in the agreement.
These actions follow several episodes of expulsions of civil servants by both countries in recent months.
Even if Algeria is not among the top 5 Schengen visa applicants worldwide, Algerians are the first group to apply for visas at French consulates. France receives more Schengen visa applications than any other country in the world, but it is also the country with the most Schengen visas. refuses the most. |
