From April 10, 2024, all nationals of several Western countriesAll foreigners, including those from the USA, Canada and Australia, will be required to have a visa for any reason when visiting Brazil. One clarification has caused considerable concern and drawn the attention of the general public: travelers must now prove that they have access to a minimum of 2,000 US dollars before being allowed to enter the country.
This is not a common requirement for travel, but many countries reserve the right to refuse entry to those who cannot prove their financial capacity.
Demonstrate your financial resources: why and how?
A number of stories are circulating on social networks about travelers to Brazil encountering unforeseen circumstances that leave them stranded in the country with no access to funds to return home. The country is implementing these measures to avoid such situations and protect both its citizens and travelers.
For those planning a trip after April 10, make sure you have sufficient funds in your account - otherwise, your trip could be cut short before it even begins.
- To apply for a visa, travellers must have :
- A valid passport,
- Apply for a visa online,
- Provide a photo ID with their application,
- Show confirmation of a round-trip booking to Brazil by air or during a cruise stopover,
- And provide proof of payment for a plane ticket or cruise.
Travelers must also demonstrate that they are not relying on public funds during their stay in Brazil. This can be accomplished by providing:
- a bank statement in the last 30 days with a balance of more than USD 2,000,
- a proof of income,
- or a credit card statement showing sufficient available credit.
Tips for entering Brazil with an e-Visa
Although there is no explicit requirement to provide proof of funds once a multiple-entry visa is approved, it may still be necessary for each individual entry into Brazil. Therefore, travelers are advised to keep this documentation with them each time they enter the country.
It's also worth noting that although visas are electronic in Brazil, the authorities recommend that travelers carry a printed copy of their e-visa and passport when entering the country.
Brazilian e-Visa application process and deadlines
When announcing these new rules, the Brazilian government specified that visa waivers for the USA and several other countries would be suspended until new reciprocal agreements are reached. The government recommends that it can take up to 5 working days to process an e-visa application, so travelers are advised to start the process up to two months before their travel date, allowing for possible delays if additional documents are required by consular authorities.
