Ghana reintroduces visa-on-arrival for 2023-2024 festive season

The Ghanaian government, through the Ministry of Transportationhas announced the reintroduction of visa-on-arrival requirements for passengers traveling to Ghana during this year's festive season. This measure aims to facilitate access to the country for travelers and boost local tourism.

A more flexible visa policy to attract tourists

From December 1, 2023 to January 14, 2024Travelers to Ghana will no longer need to obtain a visa prior to departure. They can simply apply for a visa on arrival in the country. The government hopes to encourage more people to visit the country during this period, boosting the local economy and tourism sector. A similar initiative was successfully launched last winter.

Currently, non-African nationals need a visa in advance for Ghana. Only a few African countries (including those bordering Ghana) are exempt, and other African countries were already able to apply on arrival.

Visa on arrival: How does it work?

The process for obtaining a visa on arrival in Ghana is fairly straightforward:

  • Travellers must complete a visa application form on arrival at the international airport. Kotoka d'Accra or any other border crossing in the country.
  • A passport valid for at least 6 months after the end of your stay is required to apply for a visa on arrival.
  • Visa fees are payable on site, usually in foreign currency (US dollars, euros or pounds sterling). Currently, a visa at the embassy costs between โ‚ฌ50 and โ‚ฌ100, depending on the number of entries.

It is important to note that this measure only applies to travelers to Ghana during the specified period. For those planning to visit the country outside this period, it is always necessary to obtain a visa before departure.

Ghana had announced its intention to move towards 100% digital procedures, with the introduction of electronic visas in 2019 and 2021.. It has to be said that, for the time being, the concept has been shelved.
