Kenya recently announced a major change in travel policyin abolishing the requirement for an electronic travel authorization (eTA) for the majority of African citizens.
Travellers from many African countries can enter Kenya without the need for a prior eTA. This exemption does not apply to Somalia and Libya due to their security context. Citizens of eligible countries will be able to stay in Kenya for up to 2 months without an eTA (electronic travel authorization).
Benefits maintained for members of the East African Community (EAC)
Citizens of EAC member countries (already exempt from eTA), which include Burundi, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan and Tanzania, will continue to enjoy preferential residence conditions. They will be able to stay in Kenya up to 6 months without eTAin accordance with the region's free circulation agreements.
Enhanced eTA system for other travellers
For travelers from other parts of the world, Kenya has made significant improvements to the eTA process. A accelerated processing system will be put in place, allowing us to obtain a approval within 72 hoursor even instantly, depending on operational capabilities.
In addition, Kenya will adopt the API/PNR (Advanced Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record) system, a technology that collects and analyzes passenger data to enhance security and improve the overall airport experience.
The Kenyan government has instructed the relevant ministries to finalize detailed guidelines within a week, with the aim of improving the passenger experience at the country's airports. However, no official implementation date for these changes has yet been given.
Kenyan eTA: a reminder
The eTA was introduced in January 2024 to replace the traditional visa.. The aim of this system was to simplify entry procedures, while at the same time tracking travelers. It can be accessed online via the www.etakenya.go.ke or the mobile application "Kenya ETA". The eTA is valid for 3 months after approval, and allows a maximum stay of 90 days (single entry).
In Brief - The majority of African citizens are now exempt from the eTA to travel to Kenya. - Somalia and Libya are not covered by this exemption for security reasons. - Citizens of EAC member countries continue to enjoy a six-month stay without eTA. - A system for fast-track processing of eTA applications is in preparation for other travelers. - Kenya to adopt API/PNR system to improve border security and efficiency. |
