Indonesia officializes end of visa-free regime for 159 nationalities

Indonesia has suspended its visa-free visit policy for 159 nationalities. This decision, announced by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights.., Yasonna LaolyThis follows concerns about disruption to public order and the possible transmission of diseases from countries not certified disease-free by the WHO.

Previously, these 159 countries had been part of a group of 169 countries eligible for visa-free visits since 2016. Following this decision, the number of beneficiaries of this policy has been reviewed.

Only 10 countries in this agreement remain exempt from visa requirements. These are the ASEAN member countries: Brunei Darussalam, Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam. Visitors from these countries are allowed to stay in Indonesia for up to 30 days with a valid passport and a confirmed departure ticket.

It's important to note that - technically - these nationalities had already had their visa-free regime suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic, which enabled the country to begin implementing e-VOA for over 90 nationalities.. This announcement merely perpetuates an exceptional regime. The 159 nationalities concerned must therefore obtain a visa (electronic if eligible) before departure or on arrival in Indonesia.

With over 500% increase in international tourists to Indonesia in early 2023 compared to last year, tourism in Indonesia seems to be picking up again.
