Myanmar introduces mandatory Mpox health form

On August 22, 2024, the Myanmar government introduced a new health measure requiring all travelers entering the country to complete a Mpox-specific health form.

After the Philippines, THE Nigeria, l'Indonesia or even BruneiThis decision comes in the context of a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) on August 14, 2024, in response to the upsurge in cases of Mpox clade 1 in Central Africa.

Epidemiological background

WHO has declared a USPPI due to the re-emergence of Mpox clade 1 in Central Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and several neighboring countries, as well as the emergence of a new, potentially more transmissible and deadly viral strain (clade 1 b). The aim of this decision is to mobilize a coordinated global response to the growing threat of Mpox.

Associated control measures

In addition to the health form, Myanmar has implemented additional control measures:

  1. Systematic temperature control on arrival
  2. Visual inspection of travelers for skin rashes
  3. Immediate isolation of suspected cases for in-depth medical assessment

Implications for travelers

Before arriving in Myanmar, travelers must now take extra time to complete the Mpox health form. The Myanmar Ministry of Health suggests printing the form before departure, although a paper version is also available on arrival.

Epidemiological justification

The creation of this health form is part of a wider strategy to monitor and prevent the importation of Mpox clade 1 and 1b. Like many Southeast Asian countries, Myanmar was not affected by a major Mpox epidemic during the previous wave, which was mainly focused on clade 2. However, our geographical proximity to densely populated countries and sometimes vulnerable healthcare systems requires special attention.
