New Zealand, renowned for its natural heritage, is determined to preserve its environment in the face of the tourism boom it is experiencing. Since October 1, 2019, nationals of 60 countries (including France) wishing to visit New Zealand for stays of less than 3 months must pay a travel authorization called NZeTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) accompanied by an IVL ecotax (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy).
The aim of the NZeTA is to strengthen border security and speed up immigration procedures. It allows unlimited entry for stays of up to 90 days and is valid for two years. The IVL, which costs around 20 euros, is used to finance infrastructure and the protection of the natural environment from which tourists benefit. This tax must be paid in addition to the ETA application and is also valid for two years.
Minister of Environmental Conservation Eugenie Sage wants to use tourism as a solution to preserve the environment and combat climate change. This is a fine challenge given that, according to a study published in 2018 in the journal Nature Climate Change, the tourism sector alone accounts for 8% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.
