The entry policy for Omani cruise passengers has recently been modified in the "Decision No. 132/2024", extending the visa waiver period to 10 days. Previously, cruisers had a 72-hour exemption, which considerably restricted their period of exploration of the country.
The aim is to encourage more cruise passengers to discover the Sultanate, giving them the opportunity to explore Oman's cultural and natural treasures in greater detail. It was unveiled by Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsen Al ShuraiqiInspector General of Omani Police and Customs.
The Minister of Heritage and Tourism Salim Mohammad Al Mahrouqi underlined the importance of this initiative by declaring: "We are delighted to welcome more visitors through this visa-free extension, which will enable cruisers to discover the beauty and hospitality of Oman..”
Extension technical details
THE free 10-day visa is specifically designed for cruise ship passengers and crew. It must be used within 30 days of issue.It is not transferable to other travelers. The procedure for obtaining the pass is simplified, with issuance on arrival at Omani ports, making it easier for cruise passengers. A 30-day visa can also be requested on arrival, subject to payment of a fee.
No nationality restrictions announcedThis decision is likely to bring cruise passengers closer to air travelers, who already benefit from visa exemption for stays of up to 14 days.
Impact on the cruise industry in Oman
Before the end of the year, the government expects over 100,000 foreign tourists to arrive by sea, with a total of 142 port calls. There have already been 85,092 cruise passengers to Oman in 2022, and this new measure could boost these figures to even higher levels.
To support this expected increase in traffic, the Omani government has invested in port infrastructure improvements.
Gulf Cooperation Council countries, such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, also offer visa facilities.But Oman stands out for its willingness to welcome cruisers for extended stays.
