We often travel with our pets by car. Whether on an occasional or regular basis, it's often the first mode of transport we think of because it's the least restrictive. However, this route remains highly regulated for our furry companions.
A quick reminder before the journey: don't forget to bring your passport and the necessary documents for transporting your pet. Make regular stops, and take along a water bottle with a bowl and some food, so you can offer him some as soon as he needs it. If he has any medication, keep it with you, and make sure you have a first-aid kit with you. A little extra: a cooling mat in summer is always a good idea.
Is your cat stressed in the car? Pheromone sprays or wipes are available from your vet, so don't hesitate to ask for the best option to make his journey as comfortable as possible.
All aboard!
You are entirely responsible for your pet's safety when transporting it. Transporting your pet is governed by the Highway Code and requires special equipment. (We invite you to read our related article: Travelling with your pet during the holidays: which transport should you choose?)
- Your pet is in a small cage or carrier bag You can place the body on the ground or on the rear bench, with notches on the specialized cages for the seat belts. Alternatively, you can slide the belt under fixed points (bars, handles, etc.).
- Your pet is in a large cage For large dogs, you can't place a smaller animal, because the animal's transport device must be adapted to its size. In the event of violent braking, it could be thrown against one of the sides of the cage and injure itself.
This cage needs to be secured in the trunk, so you can slide straps into it and pass them under the rear seats.
- Grids or nets can be installed between the trunk and the back seat when the animal is too large to fit into a cage. Transport grids are specific to each car model.
- Seat belts ("safety harness") for dogs and cats are sold on the Internet and in some garages. These harnesses have multi-point attachments so as not to inconvenience your pets, and attach to the pretensioner like a "classic" seatbelt. (see article "Essential accessories for traveling with my pet over the holidays")
The law requires that all passengers of a motor vehicle must be attachรฉs by a seatbelt. In the event of an accident, you may be fined if your pet is not. We strongly advise you to place your pet in the back seat or trunk, so that you can concentrate on the road ahead.
Visit carpoolingA small "pet-friendly" sign is often mentioned on carpoolers' files. Don't forget to mention your pet and ask the driver for permission. If your pet takes up a space, you may have to pay for an extra seat.
