On December 22, the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey announced the abolition of visa requirements for nationals of 6 countries, including the United States, Canada, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Oman.
How to enter Turkey without a visa
Thanks to this new regulation, holders of ordinary passports from these countries can now stay in Turkey. up to 90 days within a 180-day period without needing a visa.
Previously, these nationals had to obtain an e-visa for tourist and commercial travel. Under Article 18 of Turkey's Law on Foreigners and International Protection, the President of Turkey has the power to unilaterally waive visa requirements for certain nationalities, introduce visa facilitation measures and determine the duration of visas.
This decision comes under pressure from the European Union - already exempt from visa requirements under the same conditions - which has strongly recommended that Turkey simplify travel for nations with high tourist potential.
The e-Visa system in Turkey
In 2013, Turkey introduced a system of e-Visawhich allows applicants to submit their application online and receive their visa by e-mail once their application and payment have been processed. This makes Turkey one of the first nations to bet on digital technology to change its immigration policy.
The abolition of visas for these 6 countries is part of an international trend to relax visa policies to encourage tourism, personal mobility and trade between countries. Ukrainian citizens and APEC cardholders are also benefiting from recent changes in visa requirements in several countries, including Turkey.
In 2023, Turkey welcomed over 59 million foreign tourists, up 23.5 % on 2022. Tourism revenues also rose by 27.5 % to $56.4 billion.
