The Sri Lankan government has approved the reintroduction of a single-entry visa for tourists, following an outcry from tourism professionals and foreigners. following the switch from ETA to e-Visa and the drastic increase in consular fees.
This decision was taken by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Thursday, April 25, 2024, taking into account the recommendations of those involved in the tourism sector.
- The new single-entry visa system will implemented by June 2024 after a final vote in May.
- Single-entry visas will be valid for 30 days and can be issued online or on arrival.
- The cost of a single-entry visa would be 35 USD, excluding VFS fees + transaction.
In addition to the introduction of a single-entry visa, multiple-entry visas will continue to be available, mainly for digital nomads and frequent visitors.

The Minister acknowledged that visa requirements can have a negative impact on tourism, but stressed that security remains a top priority for the government.
However, he indicated that a committee has been set up to study the possibility of waiving visa fees for certain countries for certain periods, as was recently the case for 7 countries until the end of April 2024.
