As of October 30, the country had welcomed 7.56 million travellers since the start of the year. 1.5 million visitors per month are expected until the end of 2022. This means that Thailand will soon reach its target of welcoming 10 million foreign travellers.
In October alone, 3.1 million tourists entered the country. This can be explained by the availability of direct flights to Bangkok and Phuket. Also, the country no longer requires proof of vaccination or of proof of negative results for COVID-19.
So far this year, Malaysia is Thailand's leading tourist destination, followed in order by India, Laos, Singapore and the UK.
In addition, in order to increase the number of travelers in the area, the duration of visas on arrival for 64 nationalities has been extended from October 1 to March 31, 2023. Where the Francethe Belgiumthe Swiss or the Canada used to benefit from a free visa for a maximum stay of 30 days, it now allows them to stay for up to 45 days. Although this extension is temporary, the Tourism Authority of Thailand hopes that the average visitor will stay an extra five days, benefiting the country's economy.
In 2019, the pre-COVID period, some 3.25 million tourists a month were visiting Thailand: the situation thus seems to be returning to normal. The Bank of Thailand forecasts 22 million visitors in 2023.
