Decided in September 2023, visitors wishing to discover Venice for a day will have to pay an entrance fee. This new measureThe new tax, introduced by the municipality, is a €5 charge applicable during peak tourist periods. The aim is clear: to regulate access to this historic city, which is often overwhelmed by crowds.
Why was this tax introduced?
The main purpose of the tax is to discourage transient visits which contribute to urban congestion while contributing little to the local sustainable economy. Luigi BrugnaroVenice's mayor, explains that this is not a revolution, but a first step towards a better-regulated system that is more respectful of residents' quality of life and the integrity of Venetian heritage.
It will run for 29 days from April 25 to July 14 in high season.
Who is exempt from this tax?
Certain exceptions are provided for under this new rule. The following will not be required to pay the tax:
- Children under the age of 14
- The students
- Police officers and other law enforcement agencies
The introduction of this tax is seen as a potential example for other cities facing similar challenges. Considered a test case, if this model works, it could be adopted elsewhere to help protect sites that are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or other fragile places of great cultural and historical value.

With this initiative, the city of the Doges hopes to position itself as a leader in the sustainable management of urban tourism. Implementing such a tax is not only a source of revenue; it's also a way of ensuring that every visit is meaningful and beneficial in the long term for tourists and residents alike.
Venice has a population of around 55,000, or around 2,600 inhabitants per square kilometer, making it one of the most densely populated cities in Europe. At the same time, Venice welcomes over 25 million tourists a year, making it one of Italy's most visited cities.
