South Korea appeals to teleworkers and K-Culture fans

The South Korean government is keen to attract teleworkers and Korean culture enthusiasts. In 2024, 2 new types of visa will be offered: the workation visa and the Korean culture training visa.

South Korea's "workation" visa: an opportunity for international teleworkers

As early as 2024, South Korea will be offering a remote work visacalled "workation". This visa allows foreigners to travel and work in Korea for up to 2 years. Initially valid for one year, the permit can be extended for a further year. It will also extend to the families of visa holders, with the exception of children aged 18 and over.

To apply for the visa, applicants must have an annual income 2 times higher than the gross national income (GNI) per capita, which was USD 33,000 (30.152 €) in 2022.

Digital nomads must also have medical insurance covering more than 100 million won (67.700 €) in medical care and repatriation costs, according to the ministry.

The introduction of this new visa category is designed to stimulate the local economy. High-income teleworkers are encouraged to explore different regions of Korea and promote the country internationally.

Economic outlook and promotion of South Korea

  • Multiplying sources of revenue : Attracting teleworkers from all over the world opens up new economic prospects for South Korea. Spending by foreigners in the country will help support the local economy.
  • Increased tourism : With the launch of these new visa categories, South Korea hopes to attract more than two crores (20 million) foreign tourists by next year.

The "K-culture" training visa for Korean culture enthusiasts

In addition to the "workation" visa, South Korea also offers a Korean culture training visa (or Hallyu Visa)for fans of K-pop, K-dramas and other iconic content.ย Do you know BTS, BIGBANG and BLACKPINK? They're key figures in Korean culture.

This visa will enable foreigners interested in South Korean culture to enjoy a unique experience on site during the 2-year validity period. The government is thus banking on the growing worldwide popularity of its stars and cultural productions to attract foreigners in search of authenticity or - why not - to break into the industry.

A migration policy in line with international standards

Visa reform is part of a wider plan announced by the Ministry of Justice. The fourth edition of this plan will be implemented in 2027 and comprises five main areas:

  • Promoting economic and regional development through immigration;
  • Creating a safe and secure society;
  • Promoting social integration between locals and immigrants;
  • Respect the human rights and values of immigrants;
  • Establish an immigration administration in line with international standards.

The government also plans to reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the country. By implementing a five-year plan, it intends to reduce the illegal presence from 420,000 to 200,000 individuals.
