Google unveils AI-powered travel itinerary planning tool

As summer approaches, Google announces a series of updates that position it firmly in the travel planning process and offer further insight into purchase intentions in the tourism sector. New features include the ability to create travel itineraries using artificial intelligence, and tools for personalizing listings in Google Maps.

Plan your trips with Google AI

In its latest updateGoogle introduces a feature that lets users create travel itineraries and staycation ideas using generative AI. This new feature, currently only available in English in the U.S. for users registered in its SGE early access program (search generative experience)is based on information from various websites, reviews, photos and other details submitted to Google for locations around the world.

Users can ask for things likeorganize a three-day trip to Philadelphia with a focus on history" and receive a sample itinerary with attractions, restaurants, flight options and hotel recommendations organized by time of day.

Although start-ups like TripIt And Hopper already offer AI assistants to help plan trips, Google's update positions it as a competitor while collecting data on travel purchase intent and user interest in this type of service.

Customizable recommendations and lists in Google Maps

In Google Maps searches for cities, users will now see recommendations from smaller publishers, or even bloggers. What's more, new tools have been added to enable users to customize their own lists, so they can better organize their travel plans or share their favorite places with friends and family.

  • Local recommendations : For selected cities in the U.S. and Canada, Google Maps will provide recommendations for locals and editors, as well as lists of "trendy, popular and must-visit" restaurants compiled using Google Maps information.
  • Discoverable lists : When you look up a specific restaurant or location on Maps, a new AI-based feature will display key photos and reviews that summarize customers' favorite spots. AI can also help identify the name of a dish, which can be useful for travelers in a new country.
  • Customization tools : Users can now organize their lists according to their favorites or other criteria, using customization tools. What's more, lists can be associated with content from social networks to add context and facilitate sharing with people viewing the saved list.

New tool simplifies translation

Google also plans to soon add a new feature accessible via certain Android devices that will allow on-screen content to be translated without having to switch applications. This translation tool is part of the one launched last January, which enables Android users to launch a Google search by circling text or an image on the screen.
