Brazil postpones e-Visa rollout to 2025

The Brazilian government has announced the postponement of the introduction of electronic visas for Australian, Canadian and U.S. nationals until January 1, 2011. April 10, 2025. Originally scheduled for October 1, 2023, this decision had already been postponed earlier this year and was due to come into force on April 10, 2024.

In order to obtain an e-visa, citizens of Australia, Canada, Japan and the USA, previously visa-exempt, would have had to apply online before their trip. Already known in broad terms, the e-Visa will allow stays of 90 days for a maximum of 2 years for tourism orbusiness.

It should be noted that, according to public records obtained by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the abolition of the visa would have resulted in a loss of $15.9 million in costs for the federal government. For this reason, some deputies and elected members of President Lula's government are even calling for the e-Visa to be cancelled.

... but maintains exemption for Japanese customers

The government has decided to maintain visa-free travel for Japanese nationals until September 29, 2026, following the signing of a reciprocal agreement between the Brazilian and Japanese authorities, for stays of up to 90 days.

History of the visa waiver for Americans, Australians and Britons

The visa waiver for tourists from the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan had been adopted in 2019, when Gov. Jair Bolsonaroin an unprecedented way. At the time, the government claimed that this measure did not affect the principles of reciprocity, since it was intended to encourage job creation and income generation in Brazil.

Two years later Ministry of Tourism even proposed to put an end to visa requirements once and for all. Itamaraty (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) objected, arguing that the principles of reciprocity should prevail. The latter justified himself by a measure taken by Donald Trump in 2017, when he was president, which made it difficult to grant visas to nationals of various countries, including Brazil.
