In 2024, foreign tourists visiting Bali will be subject to a USD 10 tax

To finance its preservation, the Indonesian authorities have announced that from 2024, Bali will impose a tax of 10 US dollars per holidaymaker.

Governor I Wayan Koster told local elected officials that foreign tourists will have to pay a one-off tax during their stay in Bali. This tax, amounting to 150,000 Indonesian rupiah, will apply to tourists arriving from abroad or from other parts of Indonesia, and will have to be paid electronically. Indonesian tourists will be exempt from this tax. The authorities say they don't think this fee will scare visitors away: the tax will be used for better infrastructure in Bali and for the environment, making tourism on the island more comfortable.

From March 2022, following the Covid-19 pandemic, the tourism sector began to recover thanks to the abolition of quarantine for vaccinated travelers from over 20 countries, as well as the reintroduction of visas on arrival. According to official figures, over two million tourists visited Bali in 2022.

Known for its temples, tropical reefs and lively nightlife, the island has also adopted a tougher stance on tourists who don't respect its laws, which can lead to expulsion from the country.
Following a request from the island's immigration office, the local authorities have published a special guide for tourists.
