Indonesia could soon triple its visa prices

The Indonesian government is currently discussing a possible increase in visa-on-arrival fees. The Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Unorecently confirmed that discussions are ongoing, and that a significant increase - potentially tripling current fees - could be on the cards.

Currently, a visa on arrival (or visitor's e-Visa) in Indonesia costs IDR 500,000 (30 €) and is valid for 30 days. This visa, widely available to travellers from 92 countriescan be extended once, for an additional fee, for a further 30 days. This makes it one of the most accessible visa-on-arrival programs in the world.

Mr. Uno, while acknowledging rumors of a possible fee increase, stressed that any rate change would be aligned with that of other countries offering similar visa categories. He underlined the government's objective ofencourage a "quality tourism and reiterated the importance of all levels of government working together to achieve this goal.

This discussion about increasing visa-on-arrival fees comes against the backdrop of Indonesia's recent abolition of its visa-free travel program for 159 countries. From now on, only travellers from ASEAN nations will be able to travel without a visa. However, this legislative change was largely expected, as the program had been suspended since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This does not mean that Indonesia is closed to tourists.. On the contrary, when the borders reopened in February 2022, tourists were able to enter the country using the fee-based visa-on-arrival system. The formal abolition of visa-free travel is simply a formalization of what is already being implemented.

For travelers to Bali and Indonesia in general, the e-visa remains the most appropriate choice for most vacationers and short-term travelers. Tourists can apply for their visa on arrival when they land at the international airport. I Gusti Ngurah Rai or apply and pay for your visa online no less than 48 hours before arrival.
