From December 1, 2022, travelers will pay more for their Sri Lankan Electronic Travel Authorization (AVE*).
In order to avoid another financial and political emergency like the recent one, Sri Lanka has decided to take measures to boost economic activity, particularly in the tourism sector.
In light of the country's fiscal and currency crisis this year, Sri Lanka wants to increase foreign currency generation to help stabilize the nation. In his budget speech last week, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe proposed a number of fiscal measures to be implemented in the near future, including increased fees for passports, visas and other services provided by the Immigration and Emigration Department. Although Sri Lanka is keen to welcome more international travelers, the country is today announcing bad news for the wallets of these visitors, in line with this budget proposal to increase immigration revenues.
On Friday November 25, the Ministry of Immigration and Emigration issued a press release announcing that the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) and visa fees that will come into effect on December 1, 2022. From this date, the cost of the tourist AVE will rise from 35 USD, or around 34 โฌ, to 50 USD online. It will cost USD 55 to obtain an electronic travel authorization for business travel. The cost for applicants on arrival in Sri Lanka will be 60 USD for tourists (58โฌ) instead of the current 40 USD, and 65 USD for business visitors.
The AVE is available in several versions:
- Short-stay tourism: for up to two 30-day stays/entries;
- Long-stay tourism For staying in Sri Lanka for up to 180 days, without having to go to immigration for an extension;
- Business: allowing several 30-day entries to Sri Lanka;
- Transit: for a 2-day stopover in Sri Lanka.
