Indian travelers can rejoice: the Sri Lankan government is reportedly considering extending the visa waiver period beyond March 2024. The initiative aims to position Sri Lanka as an easily accessible destination for neighboring Indian tourists.
A reminder of the current visa waiver system
Since November 2023, Sri Lanka launched a free visa scheme for nationals of seven countriesย : China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia And Japan. This pilot program, which runs until March 31, 2024, currently offers free visas for the first 30 days of stay in the country. Eligible travelers are required to obtain an electronic travel authorization prior to arrival, a simplified application for which is free until March 31, 2024.

K.A., said that the government intended to offer Indian tourists longer visa-free entry. The aim is to simplify travel procedures for the latter, who could be deterred from visiting Sri Lanka by a cumbersome visa application process that is ill-suited to their desire to improvise during their vacations.
For the Sri Lankan authorities, making the destination more attractive to Indian tourists is a priority to boost their tourism sector and promote bilateral trade between the two nations. Indeed, welcoming more Indian visitors could make a significant contribution to strengthening the local economyThis is particularly true in the hotel, catering and tourism sectors.
