From 2025, EU citizens and other non-Irish and non-UK nationals wishing to cross the border between the Republic of Ireland and Ireland du Nord must obtain a ETA (electronic travel authorization) in line with the new rules proposed by the British government.
These new rules are part of the new Nationality Bill and post-Brexit immigration borders.
To date, this move by the British government has been seen as a "hardening" of the border, and has been poorly received by the public. Indeed, denounced as "impracticable" at the Irish border, the thousands of people commuting
in both directions for schools, labor and purchasing are indeed skeptical about the implementation of this document.
To reassure citizens, the Minister of Immigration Kevin Foster declared that the ETA would be a simple authorization, obtained online, and that like the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)It would take several years. Furthermore, the UK will not check documents at the border. We simply want to create a quick and easy process with as little impact as possible on people's daily lives.
