A major change has occurred regarding access to one of Turkey's jewels, the Basilica of Saint Sophia in Istanbul. This historic monument, which has gone through various phases - a basilica, a mosque, then a museum - is now subject to entrance fees, affecting foreign visitors only.
Special rates for foreign tourists
Since January 15, foreign tourists have been able to visit Hagia Sophia at a cost of 25 euros per visitor. This decision is part of an effort to finance the necessary restoration work on the site.
According to Hayre, the official guide, this measure will make it easier to carry out restorations thanks to the additional funds generated by these entry fees.
The previous free admission had attracted many more visitors, creating a greater need for funding to maintain and preserve the monument. However, this change has given rise to a variety of opinions. Researcher Jean-Franรงois Pรฉrouse points out that this practice could be perceived as a form of discrimination against foreign visitors, undermining the initially generous image of free public access.
Local economic impact
Muharrem, who has been selling simits (typical Turkish bread) for 30 years in front of Sainte-Sophie, expresses his concerns about the potential downsizing of his business. The expected drop in tourist traffic at his stall is likely to adversely affect his income.
