A new tax is due on all trips to Thailand from June onwards

Thailand has announced the imposition of a new tourist tax of 300 baht (8.37 euros) to come into force in June 2023.

Initially scheduled for January 2022 and then April 2022, the tax was due to come into force on January 1, 2023, but was postponed due to the adjustments required for airport collection points. The tax applies to foreign travellers arriving by air, regardless of their visa status.. Holders of work permits and border passes will not be affected by this tax. Similarly, Thai passport holders and local citizens will be exempt. It has not yet been announced how the tax will be collected for sea and land entries.

The Thai authorities have indicated that the funds raised will be used to support visitors involved in accidents and to develop tourist destinations within the framework of sustainable tourism. More specifically, the insurance for foreigners, valid for up to 30 days, will cover the risks of accidents, riots, terrorist attacks and natural disasters up to 500,000 baht (around โ‚ฌ13,700), according to information from the Bangkok Post. Risks related to Covid and other illnesses will not be covered by this insurance and will have to be taken out through optional travel insurance before departure.

The country plans to welcome 25 million tourists by 2023against 11.8 million last year. These optimistic forecasts are fuelled by the return of Chinese tourists to the international scene. Tourist spending in Thailand is expected to reach at least 2.38 billion baht (66 billion euros), according to Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. As a reminder, the country had counted 40 million visitors in 2019, including 11 million Chinese.
