Saudi Arabia announced on March 19 the arrival of its second national airline, Riyadh Air, which will be 100% owned by the country's Public Investment Fund.
Riyadh Air aims to become one of the Middle East's leading airlines in terms of revenue, ahead of Qatar Airways, Emirates and Eithad Airways.
The company will be based at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
The launch of the first commercial flights is scheduled during the second half of 2023. The airline said it would offer domestic and international flights, targeting over 100 destinations by 2030, across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and North America, with a fleet made up of modern, environmentally-friendly aircraft. Its initial fleet will comprise Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, with plans to acquire Airbus A330 and A350 aircraft in the future.

Saudi Arabia is an important market for aviation, due to its large population and its role as an economic and cultural center in the region. Riyadh Air will, however, face stiff competition from well-established airlines such as Saudia, Emirates and Qatar Airways.
The launch of Riyadh Air comes at a time when the aviation industry is recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. Airlines around the world have been hit by travel restrictions and falling demand, but there are signs that the industry is slowly recovering. The arrival of Riyadh Air with its customer-focused strategy is exciting news for travelers and the aviation industry in general.
