The Japan e-Visa government portal is back online

As of today, you can apply for an e-visa to travel to Japan. This travel formality had been suspended since October 11, 2022, due to travel restrictions, and now concerns only a few travelers.

This formality is fairly recent, as it was in the summer of 2022 that the government portal Japan e-Visa was launched and opened to several nationalities to complete their visa application online. The system is still under development, and is expected to be extended to other countries in the near future.

Which countries are eligible?

For the time being 11 nationalities can apply for an e-Visa: Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, United States and Taiwan

Electronic tourist visa is a single-entry permit allowing a maximum stay of 90 days. It can be used within 3 months of the date of issue. Many travelers are exempt from the visa requirement, notably Europeans who can stay for 90 days without applying for a visa. As this is a new procedure, the authorities have announced that other nationalities may soon be added to the list of countries eligible for e-Visa.

How do I make a request?

What are the travel requirements?

For fully vaccinated international travellers, no PCR test is required. Otherwise, if you have not received your first dose or all 3 doses, you will need to present a PCR test less than 72 hours old before departure. The result must be translated into English or Japanese. Make sure you have documents that will be accepted by the Japanese Ministry of Health. These health restrictions should be lifted on May 8, subject to the evolution of the pandemic.
