Mozambique: e-visa opens up to 183 countries

It's game-changing news for tourism in Southern Africa this year. If you've ever given up on a trip to Mozambique because of administrative complexity (or endless queues at land borders), rejoice: the country has just taken a giant leap forward and is going digital.

The Mozambican government, in partnership with VFS Global, has just made official the launch of its new platform E-Visa now available to travellers from 183 countries.
How does it work? Almost all your travelers, whether from India, Europe or the Americas, can now obtain a visa without having to go to the embassy, as the application is made online.

What changes in February 2026

Up to now, Mozambique had already relaxed entry rules. As of March 1, 2023, 29 countries benefit from visa exemption, including European nationals. With this measure still in force, it is possible to travel for 30 days without a visa, with the possibility of a further 30-day extension. For this, future travelers must submit an electronic travel authorization and pay a fee of 650 MZN (Mozambican Metical), or around โ‚ฌ8.56.

The objective of the National Conference on Digital Transformation in Maputo is clear: to make Mozambique a โ€œpaperlessโ€ immigration destination.

Here are the 3 key points of the reform:
Universality : 183 nationalities are eligible.
Total digitization : No more paper forms on arrival or passports held up in embassies. Everything is done online and before the trip.
Safety and speed: The system helps to relieve congestion at border crossings (notably Maputo's airports and land borders with South Africa) thanks to pre-validations.

How does it work?

The procedure has been simplified via the official portal evisa.gov.mz. Here's how it works:

1. Fill in the online form (passport, flight and accommodation details).

2. Upload scanned documents (passport, photo, proof of funds) to the site.

3. Pay visa fees directly by credit card (Visa/Mastercard).

4. The E-Visa (PDF format/QR Code) is sent by email.

Although the system is automated, we still recommend making the request at least 3 to 5 working days before departure to avoid stress caused by processing delays.

Preparing your file

Before traveling, we advise you to check the validity of your passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months. A recent passport photo is also required to process your application.

Depending on the reason for travel (tourism, business, sports and culture), additional documents may be required, such as proof of funds, a hotel reservation, a letter of invitation or proof of exit from the country.

E-Visa or AVE?

This new E-Visa (Electronic Visa) with visa exemptions.
If you are a national of one of the following countries already exempt (e.g. certain SADC countries or the 29 โ€œkeyโ€ countries), you do not need to complete the visa procedure, depending on the length of stay granted for your nationality. However, an electronic travel authorization and/or payment of a fee may be required.

For the 29 visa-exempt countries, an electronic travel authorization (30 days) is required.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Mozambique is the ideal destination for combining adventure and relaxation. Famous for its 2,500 km of untamed coastline and paradise-like archipelagos such as Bazaruto, the country is becoming attractive for its cultural life and national parks. If you're a scuba-diving enthusiast, you'll find numerous diving spots. Far from mass tourism, if you're looking for authenticity, it's time to plan your next trip!
